Trelawney Horses to the Fore 24 Feb 2010
Trelawney Stud enjoyed an outstanding weekend on both sides of the Tasman with the promise of further Gr 1 glory to come in the autumn.

The Cambridge farm's 'Brand Of Success' was carried to victory on the home and away fronts with crack filly Zarzuela leading the charge.

She strengthened her New Zealand Derby claims while Ellerslie was also the scene of Boundless' stunning return to racing.

In Australia, La Rocket emerged as a genuine Australian Cup contender and Bolton stamped himself as a three-year-old to follow.

The best is yet to come from crack filly Zarzuela who continued her march toward upcoming feature race targets with victory in the Championship Stakes.

She again proved superior to her male challengers in the Gr 2 feature to confirm her favouritism for next month's Blue Riband Classic.

"There's further improvement to come from her out of Saturday and she'll be right on her game come Derby Day," Matamata trainer Mark Walker said.

Bred and raced by David Paykel, the daughter of Zabeel and Gr 1 Otaki-Maori WFA winner Star Satire was foaled and raised at Trelawney Stud.

Zarzuela has won four of her eight starts with victories in the Gr 2 Great Northern and Gr 3 Waikato Guineas preceding Saturday's Ellerslie triumph.

"She's come through the race very well and I'd love to get her to Sydney to show the Australians how good she is - I think she's a very, very good filly," Walker said.

The off-shore target he has in mind is the Gr 1 $A350,000 AJC Oaks at Royal Randwick on April 17.

"There's a month between the Derby and the Oaks and she showed when she won the Waikato Guineas she can perform off a decent break," Walker said.

Zarzuela also revealed another side to her game at Ellerslie by racing closer to the pace after coming from the tail-end to post previous successes.

"She raced handier than normal, but having said that barrier draws had dictated her getting back in her races," Walker said.

"She's progressed very well and all we want now is a good track for the Derby and she'll be right at her best."

Top-quality mare Boundless successfully returned from a 10-week break on Saturday to account for the open handicappers over 1600 metres.

Bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor, who has retained a racing share in the daughter of Van Nistelrooy, she will also be in action on Derby Day.

Boundless will run in the Nathan's Memorial on March 6 as a lead-in to the Gr 1 New Zealand Stakes a week later.

Meanwhile, Trelawney graduate La Rocket downed a host of Australian Cup contenders in the Gr 2 St George Stakes to press his claims for higher autumn honours.

The previous winner of five races, including the Listed Seymour Spring Classic, La Rocket was a $A300,000 yearling at the Sydney Easter Sale.

He was bred by major Trelawney client Deborah Ho and sold through the Cambridge farm's 2006 William Inglis draft.

La Rocket is out of the former top-quality Desert Sun mare La Bella Dama who was a seven-time winner for Ho.

Her career highlight was victory in the 2001 Gr 1 Mackinnon Stakes and she also won at Gr 2 level in the Eight Carat Classic and Royal Stakes and the Gr 3 Tesio Stakes and Waikato Guineas.

The regally-bred Bolton added performance to his illustrious pedigree after striking his first winning blow in Melbourne.

He finished second at his sprint debut earlier this month and appreciated the step up to a metric mile at Bendigo yesterday to coast home with authority.

Bolton was bought out of Trelawney's 2008 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale draft for $A425,000 by high-profile owner Lloyd Williams.

By Zabeel out of the Gr 2 Dulcie Stakes winner Real Success, he is a brother to the former crack galloper Vouvray.

She carried the Trelawney colours to victory in the Gr 1 Queensland Oaks and elite placings in the Ranvet, BMW, Mackinnon and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Caulfield Cup.

Vouvray's first foal is the Flying Spur colt Right Vintage, who made $A260,000 at Sydney last year and is a recent trial winner for Victorian trainer Rodney Douglas.

Trelawney's seven-strong draft to the upcoming Easter Sale will feature his outstanding half-sister by Encosta De Lago.

Another Outstanding Yearling Draft for 2010 19 Jan 2010
One of New Zealand’s leading vendors at yearling sales for the past decade, Trelawney Stud will present a draft of high quality yearlings at Karaka 2010 – a draft that will be among the most well inspected on the sale ground.

“Since taking over Trelawney in the early nineties we have set out to improve the quality of our broodmare band and in turn, the quality of our yearling draft each year,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “We’re firm believers in providing our young horses with the best possible care and attention in their early development and there’s no doubt that the most important time in a thoroughbred’s life is the first 18 months and the yearling preparation is a major part of that development,” said Brent.

Among the leading vendors at Karaka over the last decade, Trelawney Stud will offer a total of 42 yearlings at the sale, 23 in the Premier Sale and 19 in the Select. “We have achieved some solid results in the sale ring but most importantly, the results have come on the racetrack,” says Brent. “We have produced Group One winners each season for the past ten years – Wahid, Taatletail, Mr Celebrity, Vouvray, Boundless, Black Mamba, Red Ruler, Amalfi, Allez Wonder, The Duke, The Mighty Lions, Carnegie Express, Hill Of Grace – so if history repeats, there is at least one Group One winner among our 2010 draft,” he said.

2009/2010 has seen yet another Group One winner added to the Trelawney tally with the success of Allez Wonder (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice) in the Group One Toorak Handicap (1600m) whilst Red Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler) notched up a further Group One placing in the Zabeel Classic (2000m) before taking out the Group Two City of Auckland Cup (2400m). Other stakes performers bred, reared or sold by Trelawney Stud so far this season include Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), winner of the Group Two Counties Cup (2100m) and the Group Three Nicolas Feullatte Stakes (2000m), Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) who added a Group Two and two further listed wins to her tally of 15 stakes performances in the USA, Group Three winner in Australia Gondorf (NZ) (Montjeu), Listed winner Scarlet Vanhara (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and stakes performers Ruud Van Slaats (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and Ahdashim (NZ) (Elusive City). Another to add to that impressive list is the pre-post favourite for the $2.2 million dollar New Zealand Derby and last start winner of the Group Two Great Northern Guineas (2100m) in Zarzuela (NZ) (Zabeel) who also carries the brand of success.

The bar is lifted each year at the yearling sales and Trelawney and their clients relish the challenge by offering a complete line up of yearlings where there is a horse to suit all tastes. “This year a third of our Premier draft are first foals from Group, Stakes or high class race mares,” says Brent. “That is a reflection of the investment we have made in the pursuit of producing racehorses of the highest calibre that will be at home in the best stables of Australasia,” he said.

Trelawney will offer yearlings out of no less than six Group One winners or producing mares with a further 14 yearlings out of Group or Stakes performer or producers. To balance that, the Trelawney draft offers buyers the opportunity to purchase yearlings by some of the best, proven sires available in Australia and New Zealand – a truly impressive line up.

Trelawney Stud’s 2010 yearling draft can be viewed on line by visiting the sales section of the Trelawney website – www.trelawneystud.co.nz For more information in regard to the yearlings or to book an on farm parade prior to the yearling sales, please feel free to contact Brent Taylor – 021 949 644.

Trelawney Stud Foaling News 20 Oct 2009
Stakes winner National Treasure (NZ) (Zabeel), a close relation to Group performer Ahdashim (NZ) (Elusive City) and whose first foal, a colt by Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (Danehill) fetched of A$1.5 million in the yearling sale ring, produced a bay filly by Exceed And Excel (Aus) (Danehill) on the 14th of October.

Group Two-winner Luna Tudor (Aus) (Military Plume), dam of 2009 Group One Toorak Handicap-winner Allez Wonder (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) produced a bay colt by Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) on the 8th of October.

Candy (NZ) (Grosvenor), a stakes winning sister to Group One-winner Captain Moonlight (NZ), produced a chestnut colt by General Nediym (Aus) (Nediym) on the 29th of September.

The 23rd of September saw the arrival of a bay filly by Bernadini (USA) (A P Indy) out of the stakes winning speedster Dominatrix (Aus) (Marauding). A mare with a pedigree page littered with black type, this filly already has some strong residual value before stepping foot on a racetrack.

Three days earlier the imported mare Knockncrea (GB) (Green Desert) produced her second foal, a bay filly by Champion sire O’Reilly (NZ) (Last Tycoon). This pedigree received a significant boost earlier this year with the mare’s half brother Flying Cloud (Ire) (Storming Home) the winner of the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting in June.

Multiple Group-winner Real Success (Aus) (Success Express) produced a bay colt by Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) on the 18th of September. This colt is a half brother to Group One Queensland Oaks-winner Vouvray (NZ) (Zabeel).

The 16th of September saw the arrival of the third foal for Group Two-winner Mistrale (NZ) (Volksraad), a bay colt by Bernadini. Purchased by Trelawney Stud upon retirement from racing, Mistrale’s pedigree features the likes of Champion two-year-old Kindacross (NZ) (Cape Cross), three-time Group One-winner Sky Chase (NZ) (Star Way) and the great racemare and producer, Kind Regards (NZ) (Le Filou).

Magic Millions-winner Vedodara (NZ) (Kreisler) is already the dam of three Group winners including Group One-winner Sharvasti (NZ) (Montjeu) and Group Three-winners Bhandara (NZ) (Zabeel) and Shastri (NZ) (Stravinsky). Vedodara produced a bay filly on the 15th of September by O’Reilly.

Carmel Valley (NZ) (Last Tycoon) has been an outstanding producer for Trelawney Stud having left three stakes performers to date including Group One-winner Hill Of Grace (NZ) (Zabeel). Eden Valley (NZ) (Zabeel), a full sister to Hill Of Grace produced her first foal this spring, a filly by Flying Spur (Aus) (Danehill).

Alisara (Ire) (Zafonic) is one of a number of young, well pedigreed mares that Trelawney have added to their broodmare band over the last few years. A half sister to 2009 dual Classic-winner Alandi (Ire) (Galileo), she is also a half sister to 2009 stakeswinner Aliyfa (Ire) (Spinning World). She produced her fourth foal in early September, a colt by Keeper (Aus) (Danehill).

Petit Verdot (NZ) (Carnegie), a full sister to VRC Derby-winner Amalfi, produced her third foal in the early spring, a colt by O’Reilly. A daughter of Rationaine (NZ) (Centaine), this pedigree page features the likes of Rationale (NZ) (Sound Reason), Wise Lass (NZ) (Straight Strike), Egoli Lass (NZ) (Kaapstad) and the more recent performers Vigor (NZ) (O’Reilly), Vincent Mangano (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) and Joey Massino (NZ) (O’Reilly).

Multiple Group-winner Sustaad (NZ) (Kaapstad) produced a Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel) colt on the fifth of September whilst another multiple stakeswinner in Party Queen (NZ) (Gold Brose) foaled a chestnut colt by Captain Rio (GB) (Pivotal).

One of the first foals of the 2009 season was the second live foal of five-time Sydney winner Rationalize (NZ) (Marju), a brown filly by Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) (Danehill). The filly already has a nice amount of residual value as another member of the Rationaine family.

Trelawney Stud Hoping for Repeat of Historic Gr.1 Double 12 Oct 2009
NZTM
The Taylor family of Trelawney Stud will be hoping history can repeat itself this weekend.

Acting as New Zealand’s oldest commercially operated Stud farm, Trelawney Stud has produced no less than 7 Melbourne Cup winners since its inception in 1930, but it will be its record in the Caulfield Cup that will be brought into the spotlight this Saturday.

First successful with the mighty Tommy Smith galloper Tulloch (NZ) in 1957, Trelawney Stud added a second successful graduate in the rich 2400m handicap feature with Bart Cummings’ subsequent Melbourne Cup hero Galilee (NZ) in 1966.

Previously successful in the Toorak of that year, Galilee serves as an important catalyst for Trelawney Stud’s latest Gr.1 graduate, Allez Wonder (Redoute’s Choice).

Sharing the same trainer as her Toorak/Caulfield Cup forebear, Allez Wonder shot into reckoning for the Gr.1 double with a bold inside run win in last Saturday’s Gr.1 David Jones Toorak Hcp (1600m) at Caulfield.

Beyond innate ability, three important variables will recommend Allez Wonder to the task of stepping up to 2400m in the Caulfield Cup.

Firstly her trainer Bart Cummings is a master and already has Toorak Hcp/Caulfield Cup double on the board with Galilee (1966) and Leilani (1974).

Secondly, the Redoute’s Choice mare’s race record suggests a Gr.1 competitiveness at the trip.

Successful on three occasions from 1600m-2040m for owners Suez Thoroughbreds Pty Ltd Syndicate, Dato Tan Chin Nam and Dr M Alexeef, Allez Wonder is Gr.1 performed at 2500m, with the notable achievement coming when third to Samantha Miss in the 2008 VRC Oaks.

The third ingredient to suggest a staying aptitude will be her breeding and rearing.

Bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor and reared at Trelawney Stud, Allez Wonder combines the bloodlines of the outstanding Gr.1 sire Redoute’s Choice with the Group winning staying mare Luna Tudor (Military Plume)

Triumphant from 1250m-3200m, Luna Tudor achieved Gr.2 acclaim on the racetrack with a tough win in the WATC Perth Cup (3200m)

Since retiring to Trelawney Stud, Luna Tudor has produced four to race for the two winners: Allez Wonder and Perfect Match (Faltaat).

Clearly committed to the family, Cummings has purchased three of the mare’s offspring at Karaka.

“He actually purchased a High Yield yearling by the mare at Karaka for $180,000 in 2005, but unfortunately she developed a throat infection soon after, so the sale didn’t proceed,” said Trelawney Stud’s Managing Director, Brent Taylor.

“Obviously, he must have liked her though because he came back and purchased Allez Wonder at Karaka for $600,000 and he has since bought her Fastnet Rock half-sister.
“Interestingly enough, he has also since bought for his broodmare band the older High Yield sibling that he attempted to buy in 2005”.

“Allez Wonder was a beautiful yearling. It was great to see a filly of her type not only vindicated in the sale ring but with subsequent Gr.1 WFA success in the spring also”

Luna Tudor will offer a Pins filly at Karaka in 2010 and has an Elusive City colt at foal at foot.

Excellent Result at Royal Ascot 19 Jun 2009
Racing at Royal Ascot currently holds the focus of the racing world and the third day of action provided a great result for New Zealand’s Trelawney Stud.

Having developed a philosophy of investing in broodmares with international pedigrees, the result of the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes (2400m) overnight has provided a solid boost to one of the pedigrees in the Trelawney broodmare band.

Flying Cloud (Ire) (Storming Home) ran out an impressive four-length winner of the Ribblesdale notching up the first win of the Royal Ascot carnival for the powerful Godolphin stable. Unbeaten in three starts, she is now likely to head to the Group One Irish Oaks over the same distance. The link to Trelawney comes through her half sister Knocknacrea (GB) (Green Desert) who was purchased from England with the assistance of bloodstock agents Kieran Moore and Bruce Perry.

Out of stakes winner Criquette (GB) (Shirley Heights), Knocknacrea is a half sister to two stakes winners in Flying Cloud and full brother Captain Webb (GB) as well as the stakes performers Candice (Ire) (Caerleon) and Open Offer (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux). She has a Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel) yearling filly on the ground, is currently in foal to O’Reilly (NZ) (Last Tycoon) and will visit Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) this spring.

Black Mamba Storms Home for G2 Placing 21 Apr 2009
NZTM Update
Trelawney Stud graduate Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe x Sneetch, by Grosvenor) lined up for the first time in 2009 this past weekend and started her campaign in fine form going down by just a nose margin in the Grade Two Santa Barbara Handicap (2000m) at Santa Anita on Saturday.

It took the judges five minutes to separate the first two horses past the post after Black Mamba (NZ) bombed the pacemaking Magical Fantasy late, storming down the outside of the track from back in the field. It was the first race in four months for the Grade One winning mare.

Black Mamba (NZ) scored her first win on American soil in the Grade One John C Mabee Handicap (1800m) at Del Mar in August, the victory coming after her Grade Two Beverly Hills Handicap win at Hollywood Park and seven stakes placings prior to that.

Bred by Hawke's Bay businessman Sam Kelt and Sue Foote of Keltern Stud, Black Mamba (NZ) was sold as a yearling by Trelawney Stud at the Karaka Premier Sale for NZ$120,000.

In total, Black Mamba has had 23 starts including four wins, six seconds (five of these at Grade Two level) and, three thirds (one of these Grade One and the other Listed). She has over US$680,000 in stakes earnings to date.

Easter Another Successful Sale for Trelawney 13 Apr 2009
The 2009 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale took place in Sydney last week. Taking seven yearlings across the Tasman, Trelawney Stud ended the sale with a 100% clearance rate with the half sister to VRC Derby-winner Amalfi (NZ) (Carnegie) grabbing the honours as Trelawney’s top lot of the sale. A filly by Encosta De Lago (Aus) (Fairy King), she was purchased by Amalfi’s trainer Peter Moody. “She was a lovely filly and was very popular with buyers,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “It’s great to see she will be going to the Moody stable given that Peter had such great success with Amalfi,” he said.

Trelawney’s second top lot was the Flying Spur (Aus) (Danehill) half brother to Queensland Oaks-winner Vouvray (NZ) (Zabeel) who was signed for by Grant Pitchard-Gordon under his Badger’s Bloodstock banner.

“Undoubtedly it was a more difficult market than we are used to at Easter and it took a little while for the sale to get into full swing as buyers and vendors were both trying to get a handle on the market,” said Brent. “I think the team at Inglis did an outstanding job, as usual. We had seven nice yearlings to offer and they will all get every opportunity to add to their pedigrees and of course, our record of success from graduates of this sale,” he said.

Trelawney Stud would like to thank all those buyers who inspected our yearlings at the 2009 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and, all those who placed bids on any of the Trelawney yearlings. “Obviously we would like to thank the successful purchaser’s but the underbidders are very important as well,” said Brent. “Now we look forward to following the racing career’s of these yearlings and celebrating their success,” he said.

Trelawney Hold Strong Hand at Easter 2 Apr 2009
The Sydney Easter Yearling Sale offers the cream of Australasia’s yearling crop and in recent times, New Zealand’s Trelawney Stud has made a practice of selling a select draft of yearlings at the sale achieving outstanding results both in the sale ring and, more importantly on the racetrack where it counts with Group One Spring Champion Stakes -winner Sousa (NZ) (Galileo) the most recent example.

2009 will see Trelawney offer seven yearlings at the sale beginning on Sunday 5th of April with colts and fillies representing some of Trelawney Stud’s most successful families of recent times.

The first opportunity to purchase a Trelawney yearling will come just over two hours into the sale when Lot 79, a colt by Champion sire Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram) out of Love Mary (GB) (Soviet Star). From a family that features last season’s Group One Racing Post-winner and top weighted two-year-old Crowded House (GB) (Rainbow Quest), this colt’s pedigree page also features one of the most successful thoroughbred stallions of all time, Storm Cat (USA) (Storm Bird).

Another of three Zabeel’s that Trelawney will offer at the Easter Sale is Lot 107, a filly out of Miss Danewood (Aus) (Danehill). Miss Danewood is a daughter of multiple Group One-winner Foxwood (NZ) (Centaine) and a three-quarter sister to Group Three-winner and Group One-performer Rockwood (Aus) (Rock Of Gibraltar) and recent Group Three placegetter Quartz Reef (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice).

The third yearling to be offered by Trelawney on day one of the sale is also by Zabeel. Lot 147, he is a colt out of Pedante (Aus) (Danehill). This colt is a half brother to stakes winner Taameer (NZ) (General Nediym) and stakes performer Xaardante (Aus) (Xaar).

“We have always been solid supporters of Zabeel and have been lucky enough to have bred some very good racehorses by him,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “The Zabeel/Danehill cross has been very successful with the likes of Vengeance Of Rain one example of this cross,” he said. “These three yearlings are as good a types by Zabeel that we have offered through the sale ring and I’m sure they will be well inspected in the week leading into the sales,” he said.

Day two will see Lot 182, a half sister to Group One VRC Derby-winner Amalfi (NZ) (Carnegie) enter the sale ring. By Champion Sire Encosta de Lago (Aus) (Fairy King), this filly is out of Rationaine (NZ) (Centaine) and from a family littered with black type, has some outstanding residual value. “She has been a quality type from day one and is an attractive Encosta filly,” said Brent. “She’s by a Champion sire and is a close relation to a Group One-winner which are two very big factors for buyers when they’re looking for potential off the racetrack,” he said. “Her half sister, Miss Ab Fab, has already left a stakes performer with her first foal so that’s another factor in her favour,” says Brent.

Lot 255 is a Danehill Dancer (Aus) (Danehill) filly. She is the first foal out of stakes performer Starrystarrynight (Ire), a daughter of Champion sire Sadler’s Wells (USA) (Northern Dancer). “On paper, this is a very, very good mating and the Danehill Dancer/Sadler’s Wells cross has already produced three Group winners in the Northern Hemisphere and it has also been successful for other sons of Danehill,” said Brent.

Rounding out Trelawney’s offerings on day two of the sale is Lot 311, the first foal of Group One Queensland Oaks-winner Vouvray (NZ) (Zabeel). By Flying Spur (Aus) (Danehill), this colt is typical of his sire with size, scope and strength. “We bred and raced Vouvray and it’s exciting to be offering her first foal through the sales ring,” said Brent. “He is an absolute standout in every aspect,” he said.

Lot 396 will be Trelawney’s last yearling sold of 2009. A full sister to Group Two-winner and New Zealand Bloodstock Classique-winner Italia (NZ) (Stravinsky), she will undoubtedly attract her share of attention. “Stravinsky filly’s have always sold well and this filly is a lovely, athletic type and I’m sure she will be well inspected,” said Brent.

Trelawney Stud’s yearlings will be available for inspection from Tuesday 31st March. For more information, please visit www.trelawneystud.co.nz or contact Brent Taylor – M +64 21 949 644 E brent@trelawneystud.co.nz

Trelawney Graduate on Target for Oaks 24 Mar 2009
Trelawney Stud graduate Allez Wonder (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice) broke her maiden status this past weekend when taking out the Listed Keith F Nolan Classic (1600m) at Kembla Grange on Sunday. In doing so, the filly notched up her first black type success and also set a track record.

Settling toward the rear of the field, Allez Wonder had all in front of her heading into the straight but powered home under the urgings of jockey Peter Robl reeling in her rivals to win by quarter of a length.

Trained by the legendary Bart Cummings after he purchased the filly from Trelawney’s 2007 Karaka Premier Draft for $600,000, Allez Wonder was third in the Group One VRC Oaks in the Spring and now after three starts this preparation, looks on target for a tilt at the AJC’s version on the 18th of April. In between times, she is likely to head toward the Group One Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day.

“She was always a lovely filly and developed into a nice, athletic, staying-type of yearling,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “Bart must have had an inkling of her potential as he also purchased the half-sister by Fastnet Rock the following year,” he said.

“You always hope to see horses you have bred, reared and sold line up in Group One events,” said Brent, “that’s why we’re in this business,” he said. “Last year we bred and sold the runners up in both the AJC Oaks and AJC Derby so hopefully this year we can go one better,” said Brent. “With Samantha Miss out of action it leaves the staying filly’s ranks wide open and Allez Wonder has already proven she can get the distance,” he said.

Bred by Trelawney Stud, Allez Wonder is out of the Group Two Perth Cup-winner Luna Tudor (Aus) (Military Plume) and is a half sister to Hong Kong-winner Perfect Match (NZ) (Faltaat). Luna Tudor has a weanling filly by Pins (Aus) (Snippets) on the ground and is due to foal to Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) in 2009.

More Success for Princess Annaliese 10 Feb 2009
A patient ride by Darryl Bradley earned the Lisa Latta-trained Princess Annaliese (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy – My Funny Face) more valuable black type when she took out the $55,000 Listed First Sovereign Trust Breeders Stakes (1600m) for Fillies and Mares at Tauherenikau on Waitangi Day.

Eased to the rear from a wide draw, the task of Princess Annaliese was greatly assisted when Tosto (NZ) (O’Reilly) in the hands of her trainer Graeme Swann made a mad rush from last at the 1000 metres to arrest the lead off noted front runner Elcee’s Gold (Electronic Zone). Not usually one to forgo the lead, the rider of Elcee’s Gold, Robert Hannam, had little choice as Swann swished by.

In the meantime, Bradley remained calm, coming from ten lengths back at the 600 metres, before sighting clear air 150 metres out to claim Crossword (NZ) (Cape Cross) on the line with a powerful late run.

Third in the Group Three Lowlands Stakes (2100m) before finishing a creditable fourth to fellow Trelawney-bred filly Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) in the New Zealand Oaks last season, Princess Annaliese was a $55,000 purchase from Trelawney Stud’s 2006 Select Draft. A consistent performer, Friday’s win was the third in a twenty start career which also includes six minor placings and pushed Princess Annaliese’s raceday earnings above the $120,000 mark.

Trelawney Graduate Nabs G3 in Malaysia 22 Dec 2008
courtesy of NZTM
Trelawney Stud graduate Zankel (NZ) (Carnegie) added to his black-type resume on Saturday, careering home for a win in the Malaysian Group Three Anniversary Cup (1700m) at Penang.

The result (which is internationally rated as a Listed success) is the third stakes win for the seven-year-old, with wins coming earlier in his career in the Listed SAJC Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) and the Listed MRC Vain Stakes (1200m) when trained by Brian Mayfield-Smith in Australia.

Bred by Laurie McCool of Palmerston North, Zankel was purchased by Darley Australia for $200,000 from Trelawney’s 2003 Premier Yearling Draft.

Zankel's now deceased dam, Happiness, was the dam of four winners from six runners. The winner of the 1996 Group One Thordon Mile (1600m) at Trentham, Happiness saluted the judge on ten occasions.

Successful Weekend on the Track for Trelawney Racing Team 16 Dec 2008

Trelawney Stud enjoyed a very successful weekend on the racetrack with two home-breds coming up trumps in black type events on Saturday and Sunday.

Wearing the Trelawney colours, four-year-old mare Ruud Van Slaats (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) showed all the tenacity in the world to fight back after being headed in the straight to nab the Group Two Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) ahead of Striker (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and Group One-winner Imananabaa (Aus) (Anabaa).

“It was a huge result,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “This mare has already won the Group Two Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes and to win this race is further icing on the cake,” he said. “It was also a great result in the fact that we stood Van Nistelrooy at Trelawney and he quinella’d the race,” said Brent.

On Sunday it was the turn of multiple Group winner Martini Red (NZ) (Red Ransom) to carry the Trelawney brand to victory taking out the ARC Mad Butcher Handicap at Ellerslie on Mad Butcher Family Fun Day. Racing in the colours of Faith Taylor (Brent’s Mum), the four-year-old mare proved too strong for her rivals over the 1200m journey.

“We race both of these horses with syndicates and get a lot of enjoyment out of it,” said Brent. “It is great to share the thrill of winning with other people,” he said.

Both Ruud Van Slaats and Martini Red have Group One targets on their agenda’s but exactly which Group One races will be contended over the summer racing carnivals is yet to be decided.

Trelawney Out to Rule in Another Cup 17 Oct 2008
Andrew Garvey, The Age, Australia
On Caulfield Cup day four years ago, New Zealanders Brent and Cherry Taylor hoped they would be standing in front of the winner's stall as the runners came back to scale.

It was not to be and they watched Elvstroem return to the plaudits of the crowd a few metres away as their Queensland Oaks-winning mare Vouvray finished an unlucky fourth.

Tomorrow, the Taylors will be at Caulfield hopeful that one of the two horses bred by their Trelawney Stud can take out the group 1 handicap. Trelawney was set up by famed New Zealand breeder Seton Otway in 1930 and seven Melbourne Cup winners emerged from its paddocks, as well as 1957 Caulfield Cup winner Tulloch, during Otway's ownership.

The Taylor family took over Trelawney in 1994 and have continued the tradition of excellence, breeding the likes of Amalfi, Perlin and Carnegie Express. Tomorrow, it is the turn of Boundless and Red Ruler to fly the flag.

Boundless has already tasted group 1 success, winning the NZ Oaks this year, while Red Ruler, a group 2 winner, was runner-up in the AJC Australian Derby and last start was second to Princess Coup in the Kelt Capital Stakes.

Both horses were sold at the NZ Premier sale but there is an additional attachment to Boundless, as Cherry Taylor is also a part-owner. Trevor McKee bought the Van Nistelrooy filly for $80,000 but unbeknown to her husband, Cherry bought back into her. "I was in a selling mode at the time, but Cherry had always like her so approached Trevor and he was happy to take her into partnership. It has been great for her," Brent Taylor said.

Before Boundless, her dam Nothing Less, by Star Way, had produced five winners, including three stakes-placegetters, but none had been able to win a stakes-race.
But Taylor said that one of them, Our Dance, was first over the line in a listed two-year-old race and died soon afterwards after a tetanus infection. "Our Dance and Boundless were similar types and they have turned out to be the best," he said.

Van Nistelrooy, a $US6.4 million yearling who shuttled to Trelawney for four seasons, was a smart two-year-old winning to group 2 level and was second in the National Stakes at the Curragh behind Refuse To Bend.

Nothing Less was unraced but the staying ability that Boundless exhibits was also possessed by her granddam Limitess, a Sir Tristram mare who won a Brisbane Cup.

Red Ruler is from the first crop of Viking Ruler, a horse destined to be a stallion from the day he was born. By Danehill from AJC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Tristalove, Viking Ruler is a member of the famous Eight Carat. Despite an injury-shorted racing career, Viking Ruler won the group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick before being retired to Cambridge Stud.

Red Ruler's dam, Ransom Bay, a daughter of Red Ransom, won two minor races in America and is a half sister to a minor listed winner but Red Ruler looks to be a cut above his close relations.

Desptite producing two top-class horses from one crop, unfortunately for the Taylor's there are no relations to send to the yearling sales in years to come.

Two years ago Brent and Cherry bought out the rest of the Taylor family's equity in Trelawney and in the process sold off some of the mares with the dams of Boundless and Red Ruler among them. Nothing Less went for $35,0000 and Ransom Bay for $20,000.

"We were going into debt and I decided to cut the number of mares from around 60 to 45 that we thought would be better chances," Brent Taylor said. He said he realised there would be a big chance a good horse or two would emerge from the progeny of those mares but it was a business decision that had to be taken. "The mares we sold had been well bred and the progeny well reared and gone into good stables so it is no surprise that there have been some good winners," he said.

Nothing Less is now at stud in Victoria but despite the performances by Boundless, her yearling this year by promising sire Elusive City was passed in for just $7000 at the Inglis Autumn sale. Rasom Bay headed further afield and is now at stud in South Korea.

Taylor had been pleased with the look of Red Ruler and sent Ransom Bay back to Viking Ruler before she was sold. She produced a filly who would no doubt be among the most valuable horses in South Korea if her brother was to be first across the line in the Caulfield Cup.

Another Caulfield Cup winner would sit nicely among the Trelawney alumini but if it doesn't happen this year, there are others in the pipeline. The stud is not standing stallions this season but has an outstanding band of mares that includes Vouvray, Pernod, Carmel Valley (the dam of Hill Of Grace) and Maybe Yes (the dam of The Mighty Lions).

Trelawney Graduates on Target for Spring 6 Oct 2008
Trelawney Stud graduates enjoyed another successful weekend on the tracks of Australia and New Zealand with Group One Spring Champion Stakes-winner Sousa (Aus) (Galileo) leading the way.

Already the winner of the Group Three Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle in mid-September, Sousa was just too good for his opposition at Randwick on Saturday turning the event into a true staying test and coming out a six length victor. With such a dominant display, the three-year-old has undoubtedly placed a trip to Melbourne to contest the Group One VRC Derby (2500m) firmly on his agenda.

Bred by Lars Pearson, Sousa was purchased as a weanling by Mark and Shelley Treweek and was sold through the draft of Trelawney Stud at the 2007 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale where he fetched A$420,000 to the bid of Woodlands Stud. Now racing in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed, Sousa gave the head of the global Darley operation, his first Group One winner in Australia.

“He certainly looks to be a great staying type and congratulations to Mark and Shelley for selecting him as a weanling,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “He was a lovely yearling and was certainly popular at the sale and it is great to see any graduate go on to achieve success at the highest level,” he said.

In New Zealand, Trelawney graduates were also to the fore in the $2 million Kelt Capital Stakes at Hawke’s Bay with New Zealand Oaks-winner Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and AJC Derby runner-up Red Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler) taking their places in the 16 horse field.

After a head-scratching run in the Stoneybridge Stakes (1600m) two weeks ago, Red Ruler bounced back in style to finish runner-up to stellar race mare Princess Coup (Aus) (Encosta De Lago) in Saturday’s Group One event over 2040m whilst Boundless finished an eye catching fourth indicating that both horses are primed for what could be some greater Spring spoils ahead.

“It was great to see Red Ruler put in a performance like he did,” said Brent. “Princess Coup is undoubtedly one of the best mare’s in Australasia at the moment,” he said. “Boundless put in a great effort and the 2040m was always going to be a little short for her but to run the way she did is very pleasing,” he said.

Both Red Ruler and Boundless hold nominations for the Caulfield Cup and based on Saturday’s performances, it would appear likely that both will make the trip across the Tasman to contest the Group One event on the 18th of October.

“Both horses proved they were up with the best in Australia last season and it would be great to see two Trelawney graduates lining up in one of the big three races of the Melbourne Spring,” said Brent. “It also looks like Sousa will have a hand to play at some stage as well so to have three horses competing in those big races is something we and the staff at the farm can be very proud of,” he said.

Battle Of The Broodmares 22 Sep 2008
Courtesy of NZTM
Attractive types have always had a certain advantage.

It’s a bias all too evident in the thoroughbred industry and as the case would be, at Trelawney Stud.

Pernod (NZ) (Centaine),pictured left, in her own right, is a fitting heroine. She was a tough Gr.1 winner of the 2002 MRC Invitation Stakes (1400m) in Australia and is a proven black-type producer thanks to the dual Group winning efforts of daughter Martini Red (Red Ransom).

Importantly, Pernod is also a key ingredient in the stud’s successful Josette Nicol distaff line-a noted female line that has not failed to produce a stakes winner in its four generations of existence for the stud.

Pernod is attractive enough in the flesh for sure, but ask Trelawney Stud’s Brent Taylor as to the distinguishing characteristics of her progeny and the answer is refreshingly honest...

“Ugly...plenty of length, but ugly,” said Taylor.

“They might look beautiful when they cross the line, but they’re not always born that way”

There is no doubt that Pernod is at the top of the pecking order in Trelawney’s 50 strong broodmare band, but probe a little further and you will detect that the apple in Taylor’s eye lies elsewhere.

Carmel Valley (Last Tycoon) to be exact.

Occupying the best paddock and ‘family favourite’ status, Carmel Valley is your ideal type of broodmare: nice temperament; plenty of length; nice bone; good shoulder; with an attractive head.

It would be wrong to suggest at this point, that the perceived preference is limited to her correct make up or to that of her more attractive offspring. The two-time winner has earned the respect of Taylor and of many an expert judge for that matter, the hard way - the Gr.1 way.

Her progeny, headed by the Gr.1 STC Ansett Australia Stakes (2000m) heroine Hill of Grace (NZ) (Zabeel) is systematically sought after by the who’s who of Australasian thoroughbred buyers. Successful purchases here include: Bart Cummings, Lloyd Williams, Graeme Rogerson, the Inghams and Angus Gold.

Beyond obvious commerciality, the picture as to Taylor’s fondness for the mare is made all the more clear when learning of the important milestone she rewarded him with.

In his early days in the role, Carmel Valley was one of two Last Tycoon broodmares specifically sought after and purchased by the studmaster, and in turn provided him with his first Gr.1 winner as a breeder.

Remarkably, the second of the two Last Tycoon mares purchased on this occasion also yielded Gr.1 success, this time thanks to Maybe Yes’ daughter The Mighty Lions (Grosvenor) in the 2004 Gr.1 Avondale Gold Cup.

Although by different sires (Zabeel and Grosvenor), the Gr.1 wins by Hill of Grace and The Mighty Lions provide sweet vindication for Taylor’s purposeful mating process, as each confirms an earlier belief that Last Tycoon mares cross well with stallions carrying the Sir Ivor line.

It’s a conviction borne out by fact.

Sir Ivor sires x Last Tycoon mares = 73.2 per cent winners-to-runners
= Five stakes winners.

So the question is begged, who did ‘Pernod and Carmel Valley visit last season?’

Pernod, who has previously visited Red Ransom and Zabeel (twice), is due to foal to the Snippets sire Pins (AUS).

“On type for Pernod, we wanted a strong, shorter coupled sire,” said Taylor.

“Pins is a very good type in this regard and was also a good choice for the mare in that he has real commercial appeal. Not only does his progeny sell well though, they race well,” said Taylor.

It’s a mating that again bears out well statistically...

Pins x Centaine mares = 71.8 winners to runners
= 5 Stakes winners

Alternatively, Carmel Valley revisited an old boyfriend in 2007 and will do the same again this season.

Since producing Hill of Grace in 1996, Carmel Valley has visited Kaapstad, Carnegie, Zabeel and has in more recent times visited Elusive City for the now three-year old Aqaleem and at last attempt, produced a colt by Savabeel in 2007.

This season she will foal down to New Zealand’s supersire Zabeel.

It’s a no brainer. Hill of Grace (NZ) was by the sire, and so too was her second best performer Renewable - a Zabeel son who claimed the Gr.2 MRC Autumn Classic for Graeme Rogerson.

Like the 39 time Gr.1 producing sire himself, the statistics for the cross astound.

Zabeel x Last Tycoon mares = 85.7 winners to runners
= 2 stakes winners
Nb) only 14 runners total.

Now 18 years of age, Taylor’s wish to Carmel Valley is as simple as it is understandable.

“Make it a filly”

Black Mamba Gets Grade One 4 Aug 2008
After seven consecutive placings in stakes races, Trelawney graduate Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) has made it two-in-a-row overnight with victory in the Grade One John C. Mabee Handicap (1800m) on the Del Mar turf.

“We’ve had Group One winners in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong but this is our first in the USA and is quite an achievement,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “It is a great result for the mare’s breeder Sam Kelt,” he said. “Black Mamba had been so close to stakes success seven times and finally broke through in June and has backed that up with a win at the highest level,” said Brent. “Maybe she just needed to know what it felt like to cross the line first and I hope for her connections, that she can continue the success,” he said.

In her previous start at the end of June, Black Mamba broke through for her first stakes win in the Group Two Hollywood Beverly Hills Handicap (2000m) and with her Grade One victory, has taken her earnings to over US$500,000 and her race record in the USA to ten starts for three wins and seven placings.

Black Mamba was a graduate of Trelawney’s 2005 Premier Yearling Draft and was purchased by Murray Baker for $120,000 before being sold to the USA.

Trelawney Graduates at Head of Free Handicaps 4 Aug 2008
The release of the Free Handicaps for the 2007/2008 season capped off another successful year for Trelawney Stud with three-year-old filly Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) the highest rated filly of her year with a rating of 58 whilst Martini Red (Aus) (Red Ransom) was second highest filly in the 1200 – 1600m category with a rating of 56.5. Another Trelawney graduate in the form of Red Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler) was rated fourth equal of the colts and geldings in the staying category with a rating of 57.5.

“It’s very rewarding to have the top staying filly and one of the leading sprinting fillies in the country and Red Ruler is right up there as well,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “Our aim is to breed and raise horses that can compete at the highest level and these results show we’re doing just that,” he said.

Boundless - Top Three-Year-Old Filly

The results of the Free Handicap have capped off another successful season for Trelawney graduates beginning with two-year-old filly Hips Don’t Lie (NZ) (Stravinsky) in Australia.

Hips Don’t Lie notched up the first of two Listed victories when taking out the VRC Herald Sun Sprint (1000m). She them came back in the Autumn to win the VRC Talindert Stakes (1100m) before heading to Sydney where she finished second in the Group Two STC Silver Slipper (1100m) and won the Group Two Reisling Stakes (1200m).

Martini Red showed her class as a two-year-old last season taking out the Listed Castletown Stakes (1200m) and Listed Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) and followed that up as a three-year-old with victories in the WFA Group Three Darley Plate (1200m) during Auckland Cup Week and the Group Three Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m).

Boundless showed she could be among the countries top three-year-old fillies early in the season when finishing third in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes (1400m). A strong showing in the Group Two Eight Carat Classic (1600m) on Boxing Day after a tough run showed she had staying talent and this was proved when she went on to claim the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) in March and subsequently crossed the Tasman and almost took out the Group One AJC Oaks (2400m) beaten just a neck.

Red Ruler became one of the favoured Group One Mercedes Derby (2400m) contenders when he ran out an impressive winner of the Group Two ARC Championship Stakes (2100m). Weather didn’t play its part on Mercedes Derby Day however Red Ruler franked the high opinion held of him by connections when overcoming wet conditions at Royal Randwick in Sydney to finish second in the Group One AJC Derby (2400m).

Trelawney Stud also experienced success in the Northern Hemipshere this season with the efforts of five-year-old mare Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) who after placing in stakes races on seven consecutive occasions, broke through for her first stakes victory in the Grade Two Hollywood Beverly Hills Handicap (2000m) at the end of June. Astronomia (NZ) (King’s Best) also carried the Trelawney brand to victory in the USA when winning the Listed Belmont Valor Lady Stakes (1200m).

“It has certainly been a great season for us with another Group One winner added to the tally,” said Brent. “We’re involved in the ownership of Boundless and also Martini Red so that is an extra thrill as well,” he said. “We’re already looking forward to the new season and hopefully we can achieve similar success in 2008/2009.”

Black Mamba Breaks Through 17 Jul 2008
Trelawney Stud graduate Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) finally broke her streak of unlucky placings last month when she proved victorious in the Group Two Beverly Hills Hollywood Handicap (2000m).

In her seven previous starts, the five-year-old mare had finished second five times and third twice and with the exception of one race, her placings all came at Grade One or Two level.

“She has been knocking on the door for a while now and it was just a matter of time before she finally broke through,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “It’s great to see the Trelawney brand being carried to victory in the United States,” he said. “We have a proud history of producing high class racehorses that can mix it with the best anywhere in the world and Black Mamba is another graduate to carry this on,” said Brent.

The win was Black Mamba’s third from 19 starts with her stakes increasing to over US$340,000. Bred by Sam Kelt’s Keltern Stud, Black Mamba is out of the Group-winner and Group One-performer Sneetch (NZ) (Grosvenor) and was a graduate of Trelawney’s 2005 Premier Yearling Draft. She was purchased for $120,000 by Murray Baker before being sold to the USA where she is now raced by Double Down Stables.

Boundless goes close in AJC Oaks 1 May 2008
New Zealand Oaks-winner Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) came oh so close to claiming the ultimate double when going down by just a half neck in the Group One AJC Oaks (2400m) yesterday.

Ridden by Damien Oliver, the three-year-old filly drew a wide barrier and did a lot of work early in the running to get across and sit outside the leader. Taken to the lead early in the run home by Oliver, she was always going to be vulnerable to “swoopers” and this proved the case with Heavenly Glow (Aus) (Spinning World) finishing strongly.

Boundless’ win in the New Zealand Oaks was a display of pure toughness and staying power and her effort in the AJC equivalent was nothing less with trainer Stephen McKee stating had it not been for the awkward draw, the result may have been different.

Boundless was bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor of Trelawney Stud and sold through Trelawney’s 2006 Premier Draft to the bid of Trevor McKee for $80,000 and Cherry remains a part owner of the filly. “We weren’t there to see her win the New Zealand Oaks so we made sure we were there on Wednesday,” said Brent. “It was a fantastic effort and there’s no doubting she is a very good filly – it was a super effort to run second,” he said.

Boundless’ dam Nothing Less (NZ) (Star Way) has now left a Group One-winner and three stakes performers and was sold by Trelawney Stud at the 2006 NZB National Broodmare Sale. “It’s certainly a great result for people who purchased the mare and we certainly wish them every success,” said Brent. “Actually, we’ve made a bit of a habit of selling mares that have then gone on to leave Group horses after we’ve sold them,” he said. “Over the last three years we’ve sold the dam of Wahid, Boundless and Red Ruler and we also offered Sarajay as well,” he said. “So, any breeder looking for a mare that is going to leave a Group winner, should definitely come and see us at the Broodmare sale in a week or so!” laughs Brent.

Easter Another Sales Success for Trelawney 28 Apr 2008
The Inglis Easter Yearling Sale once again set new records with a sale gross of over A$143 million and an unprecedented average of A$376,342. As in previous years, Trelawney Stud took a select group of yearlings across the Tasman to offer at Australia’s premier sale and results didn’t disappoint.

With three fillies and a colt by Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram) along with two smart colts, one by Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) (Mr Prospector) and the other by Stravinsky (USA) (Nureyev), the Trelawney draft as always proved popular, the six yearlings grossing just over A$2.1 million.

LEFT: Lot 243 b f Zabeel - Miss Danewood

The top price of the draft was achieved by the Zabeel filly out of Miss Danewood (Aus) (Danehill). A strong, well-made filly, she fetched A$600,000 in the ring to the bid of BBA Ireland’s Adrian Nicol.

The full brother to Vouvray (NZ) (Zabeel) will join the Lloyd Williams team, purchased by Nick Williams for A$425,000. The filly out of Grenache (NZ) (Carnegie) who sold early on day two, was purchased by international bloodstock agent Grant Pritchard-Gordon under his Badger’s Bloodstock banner for $350,000 whilst the filly out of Love Mary (GB) (Soviet Star) was knocked down to the bid of West Australian bloodstock agent John Chalmers for $200,000.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club signed for the Fusaichi Pegasus colt out of Kristique (USA) (Kris S), paying A$200,000 whilst the final lot offered by Trelawney, the Stravinsky colt out of Silk Ending (USA) (End Sweep) was sold to the bid of Katsumi Yoshida for A$300,000.

“We had another very successful sale,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “It’s important to take the right horses across there and we have achieved some fantastic results over the years,” he said. “It is a great sale to sell at, the atmosphere is fantastic and we got the results we were after,” said Brent. “You can’t ask for much more,” he said.
