Caulfield trainer Peter Moody tasted his first Group One victory with a horse carrying the Trelawney Stud brand when Amalfi (NZ) (Carnegie – Rationaine by Centaine) claimed the 2001 VRC Derby (2500m). Purchased by Kieran Moore at the 2000 Premier Sale for $110,000, Amalfi was raced by Ron and Judi Wanless and helped to cement Moody’s place as one of Victoria’s leading trainers after his move to Caulfield from Queensland.
On Saturday, Moonloushe (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe – Hula Lei by Sir Tristram) brought to life the possibility of becoming the second VRC Derby-winner to be trained by Moody after putting in a winning performance at Flemington that gave every indication he could have what it takes to take out the blue riband event. “He showed us a little bit early but he has furnished into a nice horse this preparation,” said Moody. “I’ve got a feeling that he might measure up to the Spring,” he said in an article written by Bill Saunders that appeared on ThoroughbredNews.
Trained by Moody, owned by Ron and Judi Wanless along with Moody’s wife Sarah, Moonloushe, like Amalfi, also carries the famous Trelawney Stud brand on his near shoulder.
“Ron and Judi Wanless have bought a number of horses from us over the years and there is nothing better than seeing great supporters of the farm achieve success at the highest level with horses that have either been bred or raised here at Trelawney,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud, referring to Amalfi’s VRC Derby victory. “It would certainly be uncanny if the same combination were to achieve similar success with Moonloushe,” he said.
Moody’s success with horses carrying the Trelawney brand is not limited to Amalfi and Moonloushe. Another star of the Moody stable to carry the same brand was Vouvray (NZ) (Zabeel – Real Success by Success Express) who, after winning the Queensland Oaks (2400m) for Paul O’Sullivan before his move to Hong Kong, was transferred to the Moody stable and went on the following spring to finish second in the Group One Tancred Stakes, fourth in the Group One Caulfield Cup and second in the Group One MacKinnon Stakes. Vouvray also went on to claim a further four stakes placings including two at Group One level before being retired to join the Trelawney broodmare band earlier this year.
Moonloushe’s victory on Saturday and the high regard he is obviously held in by Moody is a good sign for Black Minnaloushe (USA) (Storm Cat) who got his Southern Hemisphere career off to a great start with Dual Group One-winning two-year-old Joker’s Wild (NZ). Not only have Trelawney been able to capitalise on that success by breeding a possible VRC Derby contender but, it bodes well for the future success at stud of another son of Storm Cat in Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat) who is set to return to Trelawney for his fifth season 2006. “The success of Black Minnaloushe helped to give us confidence to bring Van Nistelrooy back to New Zealand as it showed that the Storm Cat sire-line could be successful down here,” said Brent. “He was also well received in the yearling sales ring and reports from buyers and trainers are that his progeny have all broken in well showing good, even temperaments,” he said.
“Kieran Moore purchased four yearlings by Van Nistelrooy from our draft this year, all of which will be raced by Ron and Judi Wanless and some will be trained by Peter Moody as well so here is hoping that Moonloushe can go on to bigger and better things from here and who knows, they might have a starter in the 2007 VRC Derby by Van Nistelrooy!” said Brent.
