Karaka 2007 came to a close last Sunday and once again, the Sales Series was a very successful one for Trelawney Stud. This year, Trelawney offered 39 yearlings in the Premier and Select sessions of the New Zealand National Yearling Sales Series with yearlings selling to all corners of the globe including Australia, England, Ireland, Singapore, the Philippines and of course, New Zealand.
The top price of the Trelawney draft was attained by Lot 254, a Redoute’s Choice filly out of the Group Two-winner Luna Tudor who was knocked down to the $600,000 bid of “Cups King” Bart Cummings. “This filly has been a stand out right from day one and we knew that she would be highly sought after,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “It is great to see that one of the best judges in the southern hemisphere also agreed and if anyone can turn her into a champion, Bart Cummings can,” he said.
The yearling sales often bring some nice surprises and one of these was the sale of Lot 102, a Stravinsky colt out of Cornwall Queen. A strong, athletic colt, he exceeded expectations when knocked down to the bid of Mick Price for $260,000. “He was a very nice colt and we knew that he would sell well but it is always nice when a horse exceeds your expectations,” said Brent. “I think it is a true reflection of the competition that is always present for a yearling that is presented well, parades well leading into the sale and has the physical attributes that buyers are looking for,” he said.
Among the yearlings offered under the Trelawney banner at Karaka were eleven colts and fillies by Champion two-year-old and Group One-winner Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality). Four of Trelawney’s yearlings by the exciting young sire sold for six figures with a top price of $150,000 paid for three colts – Lot 81 out of Carmel Valley who was purchased by Angus Gold, Lot 99 out of Clinique who was purchased by Gerald Ryan and Lot 542 in the Select Sale out of Flying Finish who was purchased by Kieran Moore.
“We were confident leading into the sale that Elusive City’s progeny would be well sought after,” said Brent. “We had a number of on farm parades leading into the sale and received very positive feedback,” he said. “Elusive City has really stamped his progeny and has left a real line of horses,” he said, “and these were comments that we were receiving leading into and during the sales and it is obviously something buyers like to see,” said Brent.
“Upon reflection, it is very satisfying to see that Trelawney yearlings have been purchased by some of worlds leading agents, trainers and owners hailing from all corners of the globe,” said Brent. “It provides us with every confidence that the thoroughbreds we are breeding at Trelawney can be measured against their equals internationally and obtained by some of the best judges in the world,” he said.
Trelawney Stud has fashioned a reputation for breeding and selling outstanding racehorses and as history has a habit of repeating, there is no doubt that we will see a number of stakes performers emerge from the Trelawney draft of 2007. “Since taking over Trelawney in the early nineties we have produced at least one Group One winner each season,” said Brent. “I’d like to think there will be at least one yearling from this crop that will add their name to that list and continue our history of success,” he said.
