Smart filly Martini Red (Aus) (Red Ransom) cemented herself a place in the Trelawney broodmare band in the years ahead with victory in the Listed Castletown Stakes (1200m) at Foxton yesterday.
The two-year-old filly made easy work of her rivals to notch her second win in as many starts. Drawing a wide gate, Martini Red had to do some work early in the race to cross the field however once in front and coming into the home straight, she always looked to have them covered winning by a length and three quarters.
Trained in Cambridge by Ross Elliot, the filly has always shown plenty of potential. “She’s not an overly big filly but she’s got a big motor,” says Ross. “She travelled home well last night and she’s pretty bright today,” he said. “We’ll assess things from here but will probably be looking at the next two-year-old race at Ruakaka,” said Ross, referring to the second leg of the Whangarei Racing Club’s Triple Crown, on the 20th of June.
The first foal of Group One-winner Pernod (NZ) (Centaine), Martini Red was bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “It is a fantastic result that the filly has picked up black type so early in her career,” said Brent Taylor. “She seems to be a nice filly in the making and it would be nice to think that there could be more to come,” he said.
Pernod has a weanling colt by Zabeel and is currently back in foal to Zabeel.
