Oaks a Great Result for Trelawney 25 Mar 2008
The result of the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) provided Brent and Cherry Taylor of Trelawney Stud with a winning trifecta. Not only did they breed and sell the winner Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), they stood her sire, Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat).

“It is certainly a great thrill to see a filly by Van Nistelrooy that we bred, win a Group One race,” said Brent Taylor. “To have stood the stallion at stud and to have bred and sold his first Group One winner is a fantastic result,” he said. “Cherry still has a share in the filly,” he said. “I didn’t even see the finish of the race because she was right in front of the tele cheering,” says Brent.

Bred by the Taylor’s (although Cherry will claim the credit for that decision), Boundless is out of Nothing Less (NZ) (Star Way) and is a half sister to the stakes performers Our Dance (NZ) (Dance Floor) and Purrfection (NZ) (Tale Of The Cat). She was sold by Trelawney at Karaka 2006 and was purchased for $80,000 by Trevor McKee. In fact, she was one of two Van Nistelrooy fillies purchased by Trevor that year.

Boundless raced only once as a two-year-old, starting in late July before embarking on her three-year-old season. A win at her fourth start was followed by a strong finishing third to Lovetrista (Aus) (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Keepa Cruisin (NZ) (Keeper) in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) at Ellerslie, a race that obviously proved a strong form guide with Lovetrista going on to win the Listed James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (1400m) and Keepa Cruisin the Group One Levin Classic (1600m).

“She’s a very tough filly,” said Stephen McKee of Boundless, “and, she has a good sprint,” he said. “I thought she was an each way chance in the race and as it turned out, it was an out and out staying test and she toughed it out to the finish,” he said.

Boundless is now Australia-bound with a tilt at the Group One AJC Oaks (2400m) on the 30th of April on the agenda with the Group One Arrowfield Stakes (2000m) on the 19th a possible lead-up race.

Van Nistelrooy was retired to Trelawney Stud in 2003 and served four seasons in the Southern Hemisphere. Boundless is his first Group One winner from his first Southern Hemisphere crop which also includes leading Singapore Three-Year-Old Onceuponatime (NZ), stakes winner Vandalo (NZ) along with stakes performers Vanny Fair (NZ), Pit Lane (NZ) and Princess Annaliese (NZ) who ran a very close fourth in the New Zealand Oaks.

“Van Nistelrooy has been enjoying his fair share of success on the track this season and it is nice to see him get his first Group One winner,” said Brent. “The talking is done on the race track and we couldn’t be happier with the results he’s achieved so far,” he said.

Van Nistelrooy has had 53 starters from 86 foals in his first Southern Hemisphere crop. He has produced 36 individual winners, three stakes winners and two stakes performers to date. “We tried very hard to get him back to New Zealand this year but the figures just didn’t stack up but we look forward to seeing more of his progeny do well in the future and wish all those breeders and owners with Van Nistelrooy’s, the best of luck,” said Brent.
