One of New Zealand’s leading vendors at yearling sales for the past decade, Trelawney Stud will present a draft of high quality yearlings at Karaka 2010 – a draft that will be among the most well inspected on the sale ground.
“Since taking over Trelawney in the early nineties we have set out to improve the quality of our broodmare band and in turn, the quality of our yearling draft each year,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “We’re firm believers in providing our young horses with the best possible care and attention in their early development and there’s no doubt that the most important time in a thoroughbred’s life is the first 18 months and the yearling preparation is a major part of that development,” said Brent.
Among the leading vendors at Karaka over the last decade, Trelawney Stud will offer a total of 42 yearlings at the sale, 23 in the Premier Sale and 19 in the Select. “We have achieved some solid results in the sale ring but most importantly, the results have come on the racetrack,” says Brent. “We have produced Group One winners each season for the past ten years – Wahid, Taatletail, Mr Celebrity, Vouvray, Boundless, Black Mamba, Red Ruler, Amalfi, Allez Wonder, The Duke, The Mighty Lions, Carnegie Express, Hill Of Grace – so if history repeats, there is at least one Group One winner among our 2010 draft,” he said.
2009/2010 has seen yet another Group One winner added to the Trelawney tally with the success of Allez Wonder (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice) in the Group One Toorak Handicap (1600m) whilst Red Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler) notched up a further Group One placing in the Zabeel Classic (2000m) before taking out the Group Two City of Auckland Cup (2400m). Other stakes performers bred, reared or sold by Trelawney Stud so far this season include Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), winner of the Group Two Counties Cup (2100m) and the Group Three Nicolas Feullatte Stakes (2000m), Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) who added a Group Two and two further listed wins to her tally of 15 stakes performances in the USA, Group Three winner in Australia Gondorf (NZ) (Montjeu), Listed winner Scarlet Vanhara (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and stakes performers Ruud Van Slaats (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and Ahdashim (NZ) (Elusive City). Another to add to that impressive list is the pre-post favourite for the $2.2 million dollar New Zealand Derby and last start winner of the Group Two Great Northern Guineas (2100m) in Zarzuela (NZ) (Zabeel) who also carries the brand of success.
The bar is lifted each year at the yearling sales and Trelawney and their clients relish the challenge by offering a complete line up of yearlings where there is a horse to suit all tastes. “This year a third of our Premier draft are first foals from Group, Stakes or high class race mares,” says Brent. “That is a reflection of the investment we have made in the pursuit of producing racehorses of the highest calibre that will be at home in the best stables of Australasia,” he said.
Trelawney will offer yearlings out of no less than six Group One winners or producing mares with a further 14 yearlings out of Group or Stakes performer or producers. To balance that, the Trelawney draft offers buyers the opportunity to purchase yearlings by some of the best, proven sires available in Australia and New Zealand – a truly impressive line up.
